TanWise is built so that we never see your data. This policy covers TanWise on iPhone and on Android (Google Play), and it is short because there is almost nothing to disclose.
Nothing about you personally. TanWise has no accounts, no analytics, and no advertising, on either platform. We do not operate any server that stores your identity. On Android, the app does contain Google's Play Billing library, described below under "Google Play Billing on Android": it is not an analytics or advertising SDK, and it never sees your sessions, profiles, or location.
If you allow location access, your coordinates are used on your device for exactly one purpose: requesting the UV index and forecast for roughly where you are. On iPhone, this is a request to Apple Weather directly. On Android, TanWise asks only for approximate (coarse) location, rounds it to two decimal places, about one kilometer, before it ever leaves your phone, and sends that rounded location to our own small UV proxy server (tanwise-uv-proxy.vercel.app), which forwards it to Apple WeatherKit (the same Apple weather data iPhone uses, shown in the app as "Powered by Apple Weather") to fetch the forecast and returns it to the app. Our proxy does not log coordinates: it records only whether the request succeeded, never the location itself, and it holds no accounts and no history of where any device has been. To avoid asking Apple for the same forecast over and over, the proxy keeps the forecast for a rounded location in short-lived memory for about 10 minutes, then discards it; that memory is not written to disk and is not linked to any device or person. Your location is not stored by TanWise on either platform and is never sold or used for advertising.
Everything you log (profiles, sun sessions, estimates) is stored on your device; there is no TanWise account server on either platform. On iPhone, if iCloud sync is available, your data is also mirrored to your personal, private iCloud database, encrypted in transit and at rest by Apple. On Android, there is no iCloud equivalent: your data stays local to the device, and if Android's own device backup is turned on, it is included in your own Google account backup, encrypted by Google, and restored automatically if you reinstall on that account. We have no access to any of it, on either platform.
If you enable Health sync on iPhone, TanWise writes your vitamin D estimates and UV exposure to Apple Health on your device, and reads Time in Daylight to show alongside your history. Health data is never transmitted to us. Android has no equivalent of Apple Health (Google's Health Connect has no matching record types for UV exposure or time in daylight), so Health sync is not part of the Android release; Settings explains this in-app rather than hiding the feature.
TanWise schedules flip, sunscreen, and session-end alerts up front when you start a sun session. On iPhone, these are local notifications plus a Live Activity countdown on your Lock Screen. On Android, these are local notifications plus an ongoing, live-counting notification showing time until your next flip; both platforms' alerts and timers run entirely on your device and survive a phone restart. You can turn notifications off at any time in Settings without affecting the rest of the app.
On Android, TanWise also asks for the "Alarms & reminders" (exact alarm) permission so that a flip or sunscreen reminder fires at the exact minute it is due, even with the phone locked. It is used only to schedule those on-device reminders for a session you started. If you do not grant it, reminders still arrive, but Android may deliver them a few minutes late; you can grant or revoke it at any time in TanWise's Settings or in Android Settings.
TanWise's optional Home Screen widget shows the current UV index, read from the same on-device data the app itself uses. It never makes its own network call.
On Android, TanWise contains no analytics or advertising SDKs. It does contain Google Play's billing library, which Google Play requires for in-app purchases and subscriptions. That library lets Google Play process and restore your purchase, and it also sends Google technical diagnostics about those purchase connections, such as whether a request to Google Play succeeded, so Google can keep its billing service working. Google handles this under Google's own privacy policy, and it never includes your sessions, profiles, or location.
Subscriptions and purchases are processed entirely by Apple on iPhone, through your App Store account, and entirely by Google Play on Android, through your Google Play account. We receive no payment details on either platform. On Android, subscriptions are managed and cancelled through Google Play, not through TanWise or us.
You can export all of your data as CSV at any time from Settings, on either platform. On iPhone, erase everything by deleting the app (and removing TanWise data from iCloud in iOS Settings). On Android, uninstalling the app deletes its local data immediately, unless you later reinstall and restore it from your own Google account backup. You can revoke the location or notification permission at any time in Settings > Apps > TanWise > Permissions on Android, or iOS Settings > TanWise on iPhone; the timer keeps working without location, just without a live UV number.
TanWise is intended for adults and is not directed at children.
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at this address with a new effective date.
